Dojo Hokori Meiyo
A Kyokushin karate dojo grounded in the values of honor, discipline, and the lifelong pursuit of mastery through kata.
What is Kyokushin Kata?
Kata — meaning “form” in Japanese — are choreographed sequences of movement that encode the complete technical and philosophical curriculum of Kyokushin karate. Each kata is a self-contained study: a set of techniques, transitions, and breathing patterns passed from teacher to student across generations without alteration. To learn a kata is to enter a living dialogue with the practitioners who came before.
In the Kyokushin tradition founded by Sosai Mas Oyama, kata practice is not supplementary — it is central. The syllabus moves from the foundational Taikyoku series through the Pinan forms and into the demanding advanced kata: Sanchin, Tensho, Kanku, Sushiho. Each stage requires not only physical proficiency but a deepening understanding of timing, intent, and controlled power.
In tournament, competitors are judged on technical precision, correct form, and kime— the focused delivery of each technique — alongside the quality of presence they bring to the floor. A strong performance demands stillness of mind. The form must not merely be executed; it must be understood, embodied, and expressed.
Our Values
Four principles that guide every practitioner who trains with us — on the floor and beyond it.
Honor
誇りIntegrity on the floor and off it — earned through sincere effort, honest competition, and respect for every practitioner who stands across from you.
Pride
名誉Not arrogance, but the quiet dignity that comes from sustained practice — pride in the craft, the lineage, and the community built around it.
Discipline
鍛錬The willingness to return to the same form again and again, each time with greater attention — understanding that refinement has no final destination.
Spirit
精神The force that carries a performance beyond technical correctness into something that can be felt — present in every breath and every stance.
