What is Kata?
Kata — meaning “form” in Japanese — are choreographed sequences of movement that encode the techniques and principles of Kyokushin karate. Each kata is a living curriculum, passed directly from teacher to student across generations without alteration.
In tournament, a performance is judged on precision, controlled power, rhythm, and the quality of each technique. It demands complete presence — the form must not merely be executed, but understood and embodied.
Today’s competitors perform forms ranging from the foundational Taikyoku series to the demanding Kanku — each revealing a different depth of understanding.
